How to install Woocommerce – step by step tutorial
In this tutorial on how to install Woocommerce I am going to be covering:
- What is Woocommerce
- What do you need to use Woocommerce
- Setting up WordPress
- Using Woocommerce ready themes
- Installing Woocommerce
You need a basic understanding of these concepts before you install the Woocommerce plugin.
What is Woocommerce?
Woocommerce is an ecommerce platform built on WordPress, the world’s most popular CMS.
Woocommerce plugs in quite literally to WordPress, allowing you to start selling using the Woocommerce platform via your WordPress website.
What do you need to use Woocommerce?
You need a few things to use Woocommerce:
- Domain name
- Hosting plan (ideally WordPress hosting)
- WordPress CMS setup on your website
You can get high quality hosting from Siteground for next to nothing.
If you already have a domain and hosting sorted, the next step in learning how to install Woocommerce is to setup WordPress.
If you have a good hosting provider, like Siteground, then this is easy.
Go to your CPanel and search for WordPress, CMS, or building tools.
I wrote a detailed tutorial on setting up WordPress which you can check out below if you’re stuck on this step.
Get a Woocommerce ready theme
You can’t just install Woocommerce with any old WordPress theme.
You need to make sure your WordPress theme is Woocommerce ready.
This means the theme is compatible with Woocommerce and works with the online store platform.
Many themes don’t, so it’s important you do your homework.
Here are the best Woocommerce ready themes, which are also awesome standalone WordPress themes:
If you haven’t already, purchase a Woocommerce ready theme.
I don’t particularly recommend Woocommere only themes because they usually have bad customisation outside of making doing the basic store bits easy. You want a good all purpose theme that is Woocommerce ready.
Download and install Woocommerce
Next on how to install Woocommerce, it’s time to download and install the Woocommerce plugin.
Follow these steps:
- Click on Plugins > Add New
- Search for Woocommerce
- Click Install
Finally, click activate to finish the installation of Woocommerce.
Once you have downloaded and installed Woocommerce you will need to configure Woocommerce.
To do this, click on Woocommerce > Settings
